What is a Custom Conversion? A Rule You Define Yourself

Also known as: custom conversions, custom conversion meta, conversion rule

Short answer

A custom conversion is a rule you create in an ad platform that turns one event, one URL, or one parameter value into a conversion goal of its own. The event records what happened, while the custom conversion filters that event so only the cases you mean are counted and optimised for.

Example

One `Lead` event can become a custom conversion "Promo Lead" that counts only leads from the promo page, and "General Lead" for the rest.

When a rule of your own beats a standard event

The order to build it in

  1. Confirm the event arrives and is not blocked.
  2. Pick one condition only, such as a URL or a value.
  3. Name it after the business decision, not after the page.
  4. Wait for data to arrive before you use it as a campaign goal.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a custom event and a custom conversion?
A custom event is the name of an action your system sends. A custom conversion is a rule you build on top of that event, for example counting only leads from one page. One event can feed many custom conversions.
Why can I not build a custom conversion from my custom event?
An event name you invented can stay blocked until the business owner confirms it. Confirm the event in Events Manager first, then build the custom conversion rule.
How many custom conversions should I create?
As few as possible. Every new rule splits the data the ad platform learns from. Create one rule for one business decision, not one rule for every page.
